Moira Shire is located in North-Eastern Victoria, Australia. It was officially named in 1994 and covers a vast area of 4,091 square kilometers. The region is bordered by the Murray River and sits at the heart of Victoria's food bowl. The Moira Shire is also regarded as one of the most productive agricultural areas in the state. The area was initially inhabited by the traditional owners, the Yorta Yorta people, who have an enduring connection to the land. They used the fertile land near rivers to cultivate, hunt, and gather their food. The Yorta Yorta people still reside within Moira Shire and continue to celebrate their rich cultural heritage through community events, cultural programs, and activities. In the mid-1800s, European settlers arrived, and the Moira Shire flourished as a grazing area. The discovery of gold in nearby Beechworth in the 1850s encouraged more settlers to arrive in Moira Shire. This led to the establishment of many towns, including Cobram, Numurkah, Nathalia, and Yarrawonga. In the early 20th century, the Murray River's dynamic nature and beauty attracted tourists, and the region became a holiday destination. This led to the establishment of holiday resorts, camping grounds and hotels, and Moira Shire became a significant tourism hub in Victoria. During World War II, Moira Shire played an important role in Australia's defense strategy. The area was a training ground for soldiers and pilots, and many defense properties were established. The RAAF airfield in Tocumwal was also used for aircraft production and was a vital asset in the war effort. The post-war era saw a period of growth and development in Moira Shire. The region became known for its horticulture, livestock production, and farming, and this remains the case to this day. The shire is responsible for producing dairy, timber, beef, lamb, and vegetables, making it one of Victoria's most productive agricultural regions. In recent times, Moira Shire's economy has diversified, with the introduction of manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The region has also become an area of significant tourism with many visitors coming to enjoy the stunning scenery, recreational activities, and cultural events. In 2017, Moira Shire merged with Wodonga Council, which will enhance the region's capability to undertake strategic planning, economic development, and community service provision for the benefit of both communities. In conclusion, Moira Shire is a region that has a rich history of traditional owners, European settlers, and Australian defense forces. It is a region that is marked by its fertile land, its bountiful produce and its natural beauty. The Moira Shire is a significant contributor to Victoria's economy, and its residents have a strong sense of community and pride in their region.
